What To Do in Playa Las Americas: 12 Must-Try Experiences

Playa Las Americas has a reputation as a party destination — and it earns that reputation every weekend — but there is far more to the south of Tenerife than nightclubs and sunbeds. Over the past decade, the area around Playa Las Americas, Los Cristianos, and Adeje has evolved into a genuinely diverse destination with world-class activity options, excellent restaurants, and some of the most dramatic natural scenery in the Canary Islands right on its doorstep.

Axe throwing at Zentral Center is one of the most talked-about activities in Playa Las Americas right now. Axe Throwing Tenerife offers fully supervised sessions for individuals, couples, families, and large groups. You throw real axes at digital interactive targets with more than 17 game modes — from classic scoring to zombie apocalypse. Ninja star throwing and electronic darts are also available. Rated 5 stars from 73 Google reviews, it has quickly established itself as one of the highest-rated activities in Tenerife south. Sessions are available daily, walk-ins welcome, online booking recommended.

The beaches of the south are, of course, the primary reason most people visit. Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos is arguably the finest beach in the south — long, wide, clean, and protected from the wind by the surrounding headland. Playa de Troya in Playa Las Americas is more central and livelier. For something more secluded, the cove of La Caleta to the north of Los Gigantes offers crystal-clear water and dramatic black volcanic sand.

Siam Park, voted the world's best water park multiple times, is located just minutes from Playa Las Americas in Adeje. The scale and quality of the rides — from the near-vertical Tower of Power to the relaxed lazy river — are genuinely impressive. Book online in advance for significant discounts and to avoid queues. A full day here is one of the best value activity days on the island.

A whale and dolphin watching excursion from Los Cristianos is one of the most popular activities in Tenerife south, and with good reason. The channel between Tenerife and La Gomera is one of the best places in Europe for cetacean sightings — resident populations of pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are spotted on nearly every trip. Several operators run 2 to 3-hour excursions from Los Cristianos harbour multiple times daily.

The Masca gorge hike in the north of Tenerife is within easy driving distance of Playa Las Americas and is one of the most dramatic walks in the Canary Islands. The trail descends through a narrow ravine with towering volcanic walls, ending at a beach that can only be reached on foot or by boat. Allow 4 to 5 hours for the round trip and go early to avoid the heat. Access arrangements have changed recently — check current requirements before visiting.

Cycling is increasingly popular in Tenerife, particularly in the south where the roads are well-maintained and the terrain is varied. Several operators rent road bikes and e-bikes by the day or week, and guided cycling tours cover routes from gentle coastal paths to challenging mountain climbs. The south is also the finish point for the famous Gran Fondo Tenerife cycling event each year.

Paddleboarding and kayaking are available from multiple points along the south coast. The calm, sheltered waters between Playa Las Americas and Los Cristianos are ideal for beginners, while experienced paddlers can explore sea caves and volcanic rock formations along the more exposed coastline. Several rental operators are located directly on the beach.

The Thursday market at Mercadillo del Agricultor y Artesano in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is worth the drive for an authentic local experience. Stalls selling fresh local produce, artisan crafts, local cheeses, wines, and handmade goods fill a large covered space. It is a completely different side of Tenerife from the resort strip and a reminder that this is a real island with a real culture behind the tourist infrastructure.

Paragliding from the hills above the coast provides a perspective on Tenerife south that no other activity can match. Tandem flights with experienced pilots are available for complete beginners, and the views of the coastline, the resort towns below, and on clear days La Gomera in the distance, are extraordinary. Several operators run daily flights from the hillsides above Adeje and Ifonche.

The Mount Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is less than an hour from Playa Las Americas and is the single most visited site in Spain. The cable car to 3,555 metres operates year-round (weather permitting), and the views from the top — across the clouds, out to all the other Canary Islands — are genuinely breathtaking. Book cable car tickets well in advance during peak season.

Tenerife south has a dining scene that has improved dramatically in recent years. Beyond the resort strip, Adeje town and El Médano offer excellent local restaurants serving fresh fish, Canarian specialities, and international cuisine at prices significantly below the touristy seafront. A great itinerary for any day in Playa Las Americas: morning on the beach or a physical activity like axe throwing, afternoon at Siam Park or exploring the coast, evening dinner in Adeje, and a nightcap back in Las Americas. The south of Tenerife rewards those who look a little beyond the obvious.
