Rainy Day in Tenerife? 8 Indoor Activities to Save Your Holiday

Tenerife enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, which is precisely why most visitors never plan for rain. But it does happen — particularly in winter months and in the north and highlands of the island — and when it does, the beach is suddenly off the table. Rather than spending the day in your hotel room watching foreign-language television, here are eight genuinely great indoor activities in Tenerife that will turn a rainy afternoon into one of the best days of your trip.

Axe throwing is our obvious first recommendation, and not just because we run the venue. Axe Throwing Tenerife in the Zentral Center, Playa Las Americas is a fully indoor experience — rain, wind, or sunshine makes absolutely no difference. A one-hour session of axe throwing, ninja star throwing, and digital darts is the kind of activity that feels completely different to anything else on holiday. Our coaches run the session from start to finish, so you simply turn up and throw. We are open daily and walk-ins are welcome, though booking in advance is always recommended to guarantee your slot.

The museum of nature and man in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the finest museums in the Canary Islands and consistently surprises visitors who expect a small regional collection. The museum houses the most complete collection of Guanche mummies in the world, alongside extensive displays on the natural history of the islands, geology, and pre-Hispanic culture. It is a genuine world-class institution in an impressive historic building, and a full visit takes 2 to 3 hours.

TEA — Tenerife Espacio de las Artes — is the island's contemporary art centre, housed in a striking building designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron. The permanent collection includes works by Oscar Dominguez, the most important Canarian artist of the 20th century. Temporary exhibitions change regularly and are often of genuinely international significance. Entry is free on certain days, making it exceptional value.

The major shopping centres of Tenerife South — Siam Mall, Safari Center, Gran Sur, and Cc La Laguna — offer far more than shopping. These complexes contain cinema multiplexes, bowling alleys, food halls, arcades, and dozens of restaurants and cafes. On a rainy day they become genuine entertainment hubs. A few hours browsing, bowling, a film, and a long lunch is a surprisingly satisfying way to spend a grey afternoon.

Wellness and spa days are perfectly suited to rainy weather. Several hotel spas in the south of Tenerife accept non-guests for day passes — the Vincci Selección La Plantación del Sur, the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife spa, and the Bahia del Duque thermal circuit are among the best. A few hours in heated pools, steam rooms, and relaxation zones costs around 30 to 60 EUR per person and is an excellent investment on a day when outdoor plans have fallen through.

Cooking classes focused on local Canarian food are available through several operators in the south of the island. A 2 to 3-hour session typically covers traditional dishes — papas arrugadas with mojo rojo, grilled fish preparations, Canarian desserts — with all ingredients provided and a shared meal at the end. These are intimate, genuinely educational experiences that give you a different connection to the island beyond the tourist experience.

Virtual reality centres offer a completely weather-independent afternoon of entertainment. Tenerife now has several VR venues where you can experience immersive games, simulations, and experiences across a wide range of themes. Sessions are sold by time or by experience, and the technology has advanced to the point where even tech-sceptical visitors are impressed. Particularly popular with teenagers and groups.

Finally, do not underestimate the pleasure of a long, leisurely meal in one of Tenerife's better restaurants as a rainy-day activity in itself. The island has a genuinely exciting restaurant scene — particularly in Adeje, El Médano, and Santa Cruz. A 3-hour lunch with local wines, seafood, and Canarian specialities is not a consolation prize for missing the beach. It is one of the best things Tenerife has to offer.
